Play Leader

SASCS, a SCIO is a parent management committee ran organisation which is voluntary, not for profit and has charitable status. All our services operate from Sciennes Primary School, within the Newington/Grange area of Edinburgh. Sciennes Primary School is one of two of the largest primary schools within City of Edinburgh Council.

SASCS are looking for a qualified Play Leader, with experience within the childcare sector, who is enthusiastic and motivated to work with primary aged children and join our staff team to ensure the smooth daily operations of our Breakfast, After School Clubs and Holiday Services.

This role initially involves becoming familiar with children, parents/carers, the staff team and SASCS routines, policies and procedures before becoming actively involved in planning of play experiences and contributing to children’s personal plans.

This role also includes an avenue to complete additional training, in line with SASCS staff training programme, which can also offer an opportunity for promotion within the staff team.

Job Description

It is essential candidates have a qualification which meets the Scottish Social Services Council's(SSSC) requirements for registration as a PRACTITIONER - see list below:

  • HNC in Childhood Practice
  • SVQ3 in Play Work
  • NNEB
  • Social Services (Children and Young People) SQF level 7

Previous experience working in childcare is essential to this position.

A Summary of the Main Duties of a Play Leader Include:

  1. Working within the framework of SASCS policies and procedures, as outlined in SASCS policy documents and operational handbook.
  2. Assist with planning, preparing and delivering quality play opportunities within a safe and caring environment
  3. Consulting with children and involving them in planning activities and play experiences.
  4. Providing comprehensive care for the children, including collecting them from school, until they are collected by parents / carers.
  5. Setting up the play space including moving furniture and play equipment.
  6. Keeping the work environment healthy, safe and secure.
  7. Administering basic first aid, when necessary.
  8. Providing a healthy snack and ensure that hygiene, health and safety standards are met.
  9. Contributing to club administration, where necessary.
  10. Assisting children with additional support needs, during daily attendance. Working on a 1:1 basis supervising and supporting identified children at activities, play experiences of their choice both inside and outside the playroom and with their basic needs including diet and toileting.
  11. Awareness of responsibilities as a social services worker, within a day care of children service and your responsibility for continuing professional learning as a practitioner registered with the SSSC.
  12. Undertake appropriate and relevant training to support the continuing development of your role at SASCS
  13. Active involvement in daily briefing and evaluation meetings, as well as weekly staff meetings.
  14. Facilitating good communication within SASCS staff team and the school community.
  15. The successful Play Leader candidate will be allocate specific additional duties following their probationary period, these will be discussed and agreed in advance.
  16. Undertake all other duties required by the Coordinator /. Management Team or Management Committee.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: From £12.50 per hour

Expected hours: 26.5 – 34.5 per week
