Managing Distressed Behaviour with Trauma Informed Practice

Managing Distressed Behaviour with Trauma Informed Practice

Considering the impact of trauma and ACEs, and how to approach distressing behaviours with an empathetic and compassionate approach.

The aim of this session is to help practitioners working in school age childcare to reframe their understanding of behaviour management by becoming a trauma informed practitioner.

We will look at how “challenging behaviour” may be better described as distressed behaviour, and how having a deeper understanding of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma can help practitioners support children to have positive outcomes.

The learning objectives of this 2.5 hour session are:

  • Identify the meaning of distressed behaviour as opposed to “challenging behaviour”
  • List the types of ACEs children may go through
  • Understand the symptoms of trauma and the impact this can have on behaviour
  • Examine practical approaches to prevent distressed behaviours
  • Illustrate practical approaches for managing moments of distressed behaviours
