Jim Taylor Knows Autism- Online Session Two: Supporting transitions in School Age Childcare for children with autism

Online Learning Session - 25th March 2024, 10am - 11:30am
£15.00

This session is designed for those who participated in the online session with autism expert Jim Taylor in December. In this follow-on session we shall consider how services can support children on the autistic spectrum settle into school age childcare. Topics that will be considered, include:

What information do we want to gather about children and what would we like parents to share with us?

Are we being upfront with parents about the limitations in levels of support the service can offer?

What adaptations are realistic and possible for a service?

There will be opportunity to ask questions and have discussions.

About Jim Taylor

Jim Taylor: knows autism. Jim is an experienced professional in Autism having worked in the field for over 44 years. Currently working independently, he was formerly Director of Education and Support Services in a national organisation. He was instrumental in the design and development of New Struan School, A Centre for Autism, one of the first buildings in the world designed specifically around the learning styles and needs of autistic students. Having been ‘Released back into the world of Autism', Jim is currently involved in a number of exciting new projects both in schools and in services for autistic adults around the UK and Ireland. He continues to work with autistic individuals, with their families and relevant professionals. He was the Chair of the National Autistic Society's Accreditation Standards Body and advises a number of UK-wide Service Providers and Local Education Authorities.

In March 2015, Jim was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Autistic Society. In November of the same year, Jim was presented with the prestigious Excellence in Education Award by the Ohio Center for Autism in Columbus, Ohio.

About SOSCN

The Scottish Out of School Care Network is a Scottish registered charity, established in 1991 and is the national infrastructure umbrella organisation providing support, mentoring, training, information and resources to the nearly 1,000 school-aged childcare services in Scotland, which provide childcare, play and learning to over 50,000 children.

All of our work is underpinned by a commitment to supporting and promoting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), in particular Articles 31; the right to culture leisure, rest and play; Article 12, the right to consultation and Article 18; states parties to develop appropriate services to support families, including assistance with childcare for working parents. We also have a particular focus on children in need or on poverty (Article 22) and support the provision of care for children with disabilities (article 23).

We are also committed to promoting and delivering the outcomes of Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) and the Playwork Principles. We also engage strategically at national and local levels to assist in the development and delivery of policies relating to childcare, children's rights and family support.

What is School Age Childcare?

Daycare of children is defined by the Public Services Reform (Scotland) Act 2010 as a service that provides care for children on non-domestic premises for a total of more than two hours a day and on at least six days per year.

The school age care childcare sector is the largest provider of play, care, and informal learning opportunities for school-aged children. There are nearly 1000 registered school age childcare services in Scotland, 588 breakfast clubs and 482 holiday services. More than 50,000 children of school age are registered in childcare. (Care Inspectorate, 2021).
