Getting It Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) and Personal Planning in School Age Childcare
Getting It Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) and Personal Planning in School Age Childcare
Designed specifically for the SAC sector, this training gives practitioners the knowledge, tools, and language they need to create personal planning processes that are meaningful, child‑centred, and aligned with current Scottish guidance.

Getting It Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) and Personal Planning in School Age Childcare (2.5–3 hours)

Getting it right for every child means understanding each child as an individual - their strengths, needs, rights, and lived experiences. This session supports staff working in school age childcare to confidently apply GIRFEC values and principles in everyday practice, while developing high‑quality personal plans that genuinely support children to thrive.

Designed specifically for the SAC sector, this training gives practitioners the knowledge, tools, and language they need to create personal planning processes that are meaningful, child‑centred, and aligned with current Scottish guidance.

Throughout this session, participants will explore:

Understanding GIRFEC

  • What GIRFEC is and what it means for school age childcare
  • The Wellbeing Indicators (SHANARRI) and how they shape daily practice
  • Children's rights at the heart of decision‑making

Developing Effective Personal Plans
  • What a good personal plan looks like in SAC settings
  • How to gather relevant information through conversation, observation, and partnership with families
  • Ensuring plans are up‑to‑date, working documents that reflect the child's needs and voice
  • Recording approaches that are clear, proportionate and inspection‑ready

Putting it into practice

  • Using wellbeing information to support children day‑to‑day
  • Recognising when a child may need additional support
  • Ensuring planning remains inclusive, strengths‑based, and meaningful

This session gives practitioners the confidence to embed GIRFEC into daily practice and to create personal plans that support children's wellbeing, independence, and participation. Staff will leave with practical strategies they can apply immediately, strengthening both children's experiences and the service's overall quality of care.
