SOSCN and West College Scotland Creative Computing STEM Training win award

Our STEM Project 'Creative Computing' has won a 'Commended' Digital Learning Award at the College Development Network Awards 2018.

A huge thanks to Dr Amanda Ford and West College Scotland for making this course possible; to all the out of school care staff who have participated, and to all those who are currently participating on the training.

This is making a real impact on the children and young people who are learning and developing through the new skills gained by the staff.

Fantastic partnership work everyone! We are very pleased.

Creative Computing Aberdeen

Our Creative Computing STEM course that has been running in Aberdeen finished last weekend. By all accounts it has gone very well and we are delighted with the progress that participants have been making. Students have been using all kinds of things to control their games including chocolate, jelly, fruit, sweets and even someone's glasses.

We hope you enjoyed the course and look forward to seeing all the evaluations.

New Training Opportunity - Supporting Scotland to become ACE Aware

Training Overview

Building Resilience to counteract Adverse Childhood Experiences- how out of school care services can support children in their care.

Duration: 2 hours 30 mins

Objectives of training: participants will gain an understanding of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)- what they are, how to recognise if children are being adversely affected, and how to help build children's resilience to counteract any negative effects.

As part of the training we shall show the film 'Resilience. The biology of stress and the science of hope.' (60mins) and provide opportunities for discussion as well as practical ideas to implement in out of school care services.

Session Details

Delivery of training: this training can be delivered to local out of school care networks, clusters of services or individual groups. The maximum number of participants is 20.

SOSCN cannot organise the training locally, so anyone interested in booking this training will be required to also organise the venue and booking of delegates.

Sessions can be delivered in the morning, evening or at weekends subject to availability.

Cost

Cost: SOSCN is committed to keeping costs for participants as low as possible however, in order to be able to deliver this project we are required to charge £200 per session (for a maximum of 20 delegates).

We do have an introductory offer where the first five bookings will receive a 50% discount so the cost will be £100.

Please note that there may be an additional travel charge depending on the distance required to travel- this will vary according to location.

New Training Opportunity - Heartstart

SOSCN is happy to start offering free British Heart Foundation Heartstart training to members.

Objectives of training

Participants will gain an awareness of how to handle the 5 most likely emergency situations, including CPR, Recovery Position, Serious Bleeding, Choking and Suspected Heart Attack.

The practical part of the training will include using a choking vest, a defibrillation training unit, as well as CPR models - both infant and baby size. Participants will also be shown video clips from the British Heart Foundation Heartstart programme.

Session Details

This training can be delivered to local out of school care networks, clusters of services or individual groups. The maximum number of participants is 20 and the minimum is 12.

The training requires a suitable space to give participants enough room to use the training models, as well as watch the video clips. It is not essential that you have the required IT equipment to show the DVD clips as SOSCN can provide these, however, for larger groups we would require somewhere to project onto; such as a screen or white wall.

The session lasts 2 hours and can be delivered in the evening, or at weekends, subject to availability. The trainer will require access to the training location 30 minutes prior to the session starting in order to set up.

ACHIEVING QUALITY SCOTLAND

Awards Update

We have recently awarded Langside After School Care Club Association (LASCCA) in Glasgow their AQS award. The service was awarded a Gold standard award.

Congratulations and well done to everybody at the service, our AQS assessor said that it was one of the best portfolios that they had seen.

Glasgow Groups Submission

Well done to all the Glasgow groups (nearly 30) some of which have already completed and some of which are in the process of completing their AQS submissions.

This is a lot of hard work but we appreciate and recognise your commitment to providing quality out of school care services to children and families.

Assessment of portfolios is beginning but please note due to the high level of submissions all at once, and holidays, the turn-around time will be longer than the normal 6 weeks' maximum. The assessor will keep you informed of progress.

The Poverty and Inequality Commission Advice for the Scottish Government on addressing poverty during school holidays

The Poverty and Inequality Commission has published its advice today for the Scottish Government on addressing poverty during school holidays.

The Poverty and Inequality Commission was asked by the Scottish Government to consider whether there were actions in Every Child, Every Chance: The Tackling Child Poverty Delivery Plan 2018-2022 that should be developed in tandem in order to maximise their effectiveness. In particular the Commission was asked to consider the role of local authorities, social enterprise and the third sector in providing after school and holiday care and responding to school holiday insecurity.

Scottish Social Services Awards 2019

The awards are open to people who are registered with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) or who work for an organisation inspected by the Care Inspectorate.

Entries for the awards will open on 7 January 2019.

We hope to see some OSC services go for these awards.
